¿CÓMO SE DICE? STOLES IN SPANISH
If you guessed estolas, tú sabes! Or maybe this is the first time you’ve had to say this word in Spanish because you are graduating this year! Many of us who are first generation Latinos graduating from college have had to figure things out on our own, alongside parents who sacrificed everything to get us there.
In April, Yo Sabo launched an initiative to help 100 first generation students by giving each $50 toward their graduation stoles. Why stoles? Because every detail on a graduation stole is a tribute to our cultural roots and family legacy. For the entry, we asked students to answer just one question: 'What does being the first in your family to graduate from college mean to you?'
Their responses were beyond anything we imagined receiving and they were more than happy to have their stories shared. I shared snippets from these soon-to-be grads on Instagram to motivate other students, whether they are starting college soon, facing difficult times, or thinking about pursuing higher degrees…to let them know that they are never alone!
